My God for the other life that you have given my Soul
I thank you.
For the tranquility that you have given my soul
I thank you.
My God--the night is coming. You will close my eyes
Before the dawn.
And I--then I will paint new pictures for you, of the new
Earth and a new sky.

Marc Chagall, near the end of his life

(The painting is his Le Paradis.)

I was surprised to learn that Chagall was a Russian painter. And fairly contemporary.

..as well as amazingly talented.

Thanks for the picture and the photo.

What a beautiful image, with words to match.

Really beautiful. I was going to use a Marc Chagall image in my sermon yesterday but I had to edit it out....will use it sometime, though! Thanks for this!

What beautiful words.

I love Chagall. We have some beautiful works of his in Chicago. A giant mosaic downtown and some rich stained glass in the Art Institute.

He always struck me as such a joyful artist.

One of my earliest God experiences was on a visit to Tudely, a tiny church not far from my childhood home, where he had produced a full set of windows as a memorial to a teenager who'd died in a boating accident. I remember sitting perfectly still for a good hour feeling myself immersed in light and glory. Now I have a postcard from that church in my prayer corner...but I'd never encountered this beautiful prayer. I love it. Thank you so very much for posting it here.
