Yesterday I wrote that Lady Bird's favorite flower, the bluebonnet, was mine too. Well, it is my favorite, but today I read an article in the Houston Chronicle that said her very favorite flower was the gallardia, which we usually call firewheel or Indian blanket. They provide a splendid red and yellow display along the roadside. They bloom later in the season than bluebonnets and Indian paintbrush; I haven't been out in the country lately, but if I were I bet I could probably find some along the side of the road near Hallettsville and Shiner right now. So here are some pictures of a true Texas beauty for you to enjoy.

Thank you! I have these in a little plot of garden I call "My Wildflower Plot" because I dumped a mixture of seeds leftover from some old packets. Since I didn't bother to write down what was in the mix, I didn't know!

Zorra, thank you for the beautiful pictures! Are these the same as Indian Paintbrush? Driving between Corpus Christi and San Antonio I am always grateful to Lady Bird for the wildflowers in the spring.
Jan, no, Indian paintbrush is all red and has little bracts like the blluebonnets. It's the red you usually see sprinkled in among the blue during bluebonnet season.
QG, I looked up Tomie de Paola and saw she has written 200 books! Which story?
Net, I'm impressed that they will grow as far north as Pennsylvania. Wild flowers are so hardy.
