Agreeing to disagree

A dear friend of thirty-seven years' standing wrote to me of his concern that President Obama "is moving America towards economic ruin in order to establish a socialist regime and eventually a dictatorship". He could not have been more serious.

I am stunned that a person I have known and loved for decades could believe such a thing. These days I don't have the mental energy after work for sustained debate, much less to deconstruct piece by piece all of the proof-texts he sent me from The Audacity of Hope that "prove" Obama is "really" a Muslim (implication: we're all gonna die). I just told him that I believe the President is a brother in Christ and that he seeks God's guidance in one of the hardest jobs on earth. I sent him a couple of pertinent references from Snopes.com (which, I have learned, convinces no one whose mind is already made up).

W. and I have always been able to talk about everything, but it looks like that just changed.

Oh, dear.
I find that book helped me understand how *moderate* our President would be, despite the effort to paint him as radical (and despite my wish he would be a little more radical, too).

My dad keeps forwarding e-mails that he knows is opposite of how I feel, I need to tell him that I delete them as they enter my life so if he really wants me to read any of them he needs to stop with the political right message. But first I'll let him buy me brunch today ;')

I think Obama is tearing the Country apart. He should have let GM fo into bankruptcy and not bail them out. it is what makes them stronger in the long run. It does not fire everyone as the Administration is insinuating it forces them to reorganize. Can't blame Bush for the additional 9 Trillion dollars in Debt - NOt that I like Bush either - he was to weak to stand up to the Chris Dodds of the world that caused the financial mess to begin with.

BTW - friends should not discuss politics and pollitical opinions will and should differ amoungst even the best of friends. We are all unique and that is the way it should be. If no one questions a politicians motives, ideas and opinions then we as the people of this Country are failing to do our due diligence. Love you Country and question your politicians. For example why is it some come into office with little money and leave with such wealth - more wealth than their salaries could ever provide?

Our country is so divided now it scares me. It feels like we can't get anything done because we are too busy pointing fingers and playing the blame game.

I wish I could say it's only the conservatives who are being petty and unfair because when Bush was in office, I was constantly putting him down and his policies in a snarky fashion. I was the one with the T-shirt that said "some village is missing it's idiot."

We need to set aside our pettyness and get down to some real changes for the good of all of God's creation.

Peace to you my friend.

I hear ya! I have had to just keep my mouth shut on several occassions over the last 7 weeks with members of my church. Some of it is just scary. Pray hard.
