Friday Five: Take Me, Baby, or Leave Me

Thanks to Songbird for today's musical F5:

Although written by a young man, this song from "Rent" became an anthem for women of a certain age ready to be taken on their own terms. Maureen and Joanne love each other, but they are *very* different.

Whether it's new friends or new loves or new employers, what are five things people should know about you?

1. I like people, but I'm very introversive and I need a lot of alone time. Sometimes in groups that need overwhelms my social skills, and I can come across as aloof or even a bit odd. It's not about you. (well, maybe sometimes it is :)) Give me a little time alone and I'll be back, ready to have fun.

2. I love good food, creatively prepared, but I'm not an insufferable snob about it. I'll go eat wherever you want to go, but if you ask me where we should go I'll have a good suggestion. And if I offer to cook, take me up on it.

3. Psychology is my occupation, not my life. Please don't come up to me at a social gathering looking for free advice about your love life, your unruly child, or your family of origin. I'll be happy to give you a referral.

4. If I haven't had my coffee yet, approach at your own risk. Just one cup in the morning, but I need that one cup!

5. I'm a proud Southerner/Texan who can't imagine living north of the Mason-Dixon line. For one thing, folks talk funny up there. For another thing, I'd freeze!

Here's a bonus: I bet I can answer nearly any trivia question about American or British popular music, 1964-1974. Go on, try me!

Gosh, do people do that to you at parties? How rude!

LOL... You should have a sign like Lucy from Charlie Brown did... "The Doctor is NOT in"...

I am going to take you up on your challenge, ready?

Paul Jones left Manfred Mann and had a hit of his own in 1966, but what was it?

:D Grew up listening to British popular music from my parents time...

Hey, I'm also an introvert. I'm afraid I appear aloof, too, but usually I'm too shy to worry about that until later! I can't think of any music questions to ask you though I am impressed.

From your parents' time, eh? You remind me of my younger friends who are very familiar with my favorite old shows because they've "seen that on Nickelodeon." ;)

WOW!!! That IS awesome!! Ok, now I have to think of a tougher one, raise the bar a little, ya know? :D
My parents were born and raised in Britain, so I know some of the classics, but that's where it stops.

Yes, y'all, totally let her cook! The Alpha and I were treated to a lovely dinner made by Zorra and The Scientist back in October -- what an amazing culinary team!

I'm really not into to parties either. Sometimes I make little deals with myself ahead of time, like if I talk to one new person, I can give myself permission to be withdrawn. LOL

I find your career choice interesting, being an introvert.

I know what you mean about being asked pro questions while off duty. But only because I'm always mistaken for Meryl Streep. :-)

And trivia question: What was the name of Grace Slick's first band?

I hear you on #1.

Regarding #3, I get a similar thing with people wanting pastoral guidance. And I hate it when people who aren't Christians or involved in the church want to get into some kind of debate about all that is wrong and hypocritical about Christianity, the Bible, the church, theology, etc. I try to smile and say sweetly, "I do have other interests, you know!

PG: The Great Society.
And really, the career choice isn't so odd. I do fine one-on-one.

Kim, I love "I do have other interests", but I'm sure it flies right by. When people project all of their feelings about God and the church onto you, they don't want to hear that you are actually a human being with a real life.

Great play. I'd love to dine with you sometime. Maybe I'll get to visit my sister who lives in your area sometime this spring and have a meet up.

I call myself a social introvert.

At least at parties I only have to answer questions about plants.

I have been thinking lately about how nice it would be to break bread with some blogging friends, but after the "whole pancake syrup controversy," I am having some second thoughts ;')
