All clear

We made it! Unlike 95% of the people around us, our subdivision has water and power. There was no damage to our house or to my MIL's house. We only lost a section of seventeen-year-old fence.

So much for this year's pecan crop:

...and next year's peaches. (This was our fourth peach tree since 1991, and I think we are finally ready to accept that we're not meant to grow peaches in this yard!)
And O my poor caladiums!
Like everyone else, we had a long and anxious night, but our area had only light damage compared to the storm surge areas on the coast, and Houston itself. You won't be seeing our county on the news. We went into the Scientist's lab today to check on the mice (they were fine), and saw less damage in town than we had expected to see. Many billboards were damaged, and a number of trees were broken or uprooted, but we saw little severe damage to buildings along the highways where we were. Only emergency crews are allowed downtown, so our views of the skyscrapers with the broken windows are the same as yours--on TV only.

Please pray for the many thousands who are without electricity, water, and in many cases, homes. Thank God the storm has passed.

P.S. I've been catching up on blogs, and I have to say I'm puzzled. How could there be so many people who were not waiting for a hurricane yesterday?

Thanks for the update -- photos and everything! We are impressed, and very glad the damage was minimal. (And The Alpha wants to know if he can have the remnants of your 17-year-old fence to use with his Halloween decorations... feel free to ignore him and move on!)

so glad you are all ok. I'll mourn the peaches with you, though. We were over here waiting for Ike too, but of course all we got was really HOT.

no hurricanes here, but I was teaching about them on Friday... does that count?

so I am not happy with the hot and humid weather we are to be experiencing today, but will try in the midst of the discomfort to think of those who faced that storm surge.

Zorra

Having lived in Houston many years ago, it was strange for me to recognize so many of the names of streets and places. I was sorry to hear Brennan's burned. I'm very happy to hear you and yours are relatively unscathed.

Peace,
Milton

Zorra, I'm so glad you are okay! How did Amie handle the whole thing?

I'm glad to hear you are ok, and continue to pray for all people in your area. Amie, too. :)

Amie is always nervous during a storm, and was unsettled by not being at home. But she was OK because we were there; she actually got through it just fine.

Milton, I think my Chowhound buddies are more upset about Brennan's burning than they are about their own problems!

Thank you all for your comments. We have at least one friend coming to stay with us tonight, maybe more. I hope we can get the pecans swept up first!

Fences, pecans, peaches and caladiums aside, we are grateful you all are OK. We are praying up here! bohemia survives.

we also lost a peach tree (which looked pretty dead anyway-- we were contemplating having it removed-- one less expense now!) and caladiums. I'm thinking they'll rebuild Brennans. Glad y'all came out well from all this!
